Dungiven GAC - History

History

The club is named after Saint Canice, who was born in 516AD in Cianacta Glinne Geimin, which is modern day Dungiven. Although the club, St Canice's, was founded in 1943 there is firm evidence that Gaelic games were played in Dungiven over a century before that. The first record of Gaelic football played by a Dungiven team was a match on 9 April 1922 against Creggan (from Faughanvale Parish). The Dungiven team of that time played under the name of John Mitchel's GFC and they clinched the North Derry League that year.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

When the landscape buckles and jerks around, when a dust column of debris rises from the collapse of a block of buildings on bodies that could have been your own, when the staves of history fall awry and the barrel of time bursts apart, some turn to prayer, some to poetry: words in the memory, a stained book carried close to the body, the notebook scribbled by hand—a center of gravity.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

There is a history in all men’s lives,
Figuring the natures of the times deceased,
The which observed, a man may prophesy,
With a near aim, of the main chance of things
As yet not come to life.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

In all history no class has been enfranchised without some selfish motive underlying. If to-day we could prove to Republicans or Democrats that every woman would vote for their party, we should be enfranchised.
    Carrie Chapman Catt (1859–1947)
