Dubris - Classis Britannica Fort

Classis Britannica Fort

The Roman fleet in British waters, the Classis Britannica's main purpose was protecting the Gaul-to-Britain routes and supporting the land army in Britannia, not defending the British Isles from invasion. For this reason its main fort was in Portus Itius (Boulogne-sur-Mer, called also Gesoriacum or Bononia), not Dover. However, it did have other, smaller bases in Britannia itself, at Rutupiae and Dubris.

Famous quotes containing the word fort:

‘Tis said of love that it sometimes goes, sometimes flies; runs with one, walks gravely with another; turns a third into ice, and sets a fourth in a flame: it wounds one, another it kills: like lightning it begins and ends in the same moment: it makes that fort yield at night which it besieged but in the morning; for there is no force able to resist it.
    Miguel De Cervantes (1547–1616)
