After 1950
Since 1950 no Irish footballer has played for both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland at senior level. However both Alan Kernaghan and Darron Gibson were capped as schoolboy internationals for Northern Ireland before going onto represent the Republic at senior level. In addition Tony Kane has represented both for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland at under-21 level. Together with Michael O'Connor and Marc Wilson, Gibson and Kane are one of several Northern Irish footballers, involved in an ongoing dispute between the IFA and the FAI over international eligibility. The dispute emerged after the Good Friday Agreement allowed people born in Northern Ireland to claim either Republic of Ireland and/or United Kingdom nationality.
