Dragon Ball Films

Since the debut of the Dragon Ball anime series in 1986, Toei Animation has produced seventeen theatrical films based on the franchise: four films based on the original Dragon Ball anime and thirteen films based on the sequel series Dragon Ball Z, with the seventeenth film commemorating the tenth anniversary of the series. The films were self-contained stories that do not follow the same continuity as the television series.

There are also three television specials, which were released in North America as films, and two short films, which were shown at the 2008 Jump Super Anime Tour and Jump Festa 2012 respectively. There is a two part original video animation created as strategy guides for the 1993 video game Dragon Ball Z Side Story: Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans, it was remade in 2012 and included with the Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 video game.

There is an upcoming eighteenth film, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, scheduled to enter theaters on March 30, 2013.

Famous quotes containing the words dragon, ball and/or films:

    The Powers whose name and shape no living creature knows
    Have pulled the Immortal Rose;
    And though the Seven Lights bowed in their dance and wept,
    The Polar Dragon slept,
    His heavy rings uncoiled from glimmering deep to deep....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    A ball player’s got to be kept hungry to become a big leaguer. That’s why no boy from a rich family ever made the big leagues.
    Joe Dimaggio (b. 1914)

    Right now I think censorship is necessary; the things they’re doing and saying in films right now just shouldn’t be allowed. There’s no dignity anymore and I think that’s very important.
    Mae West (1892–1980)
