Society
The society and culture of the Draconis Combine is inspired by traditional Japanese culture. This is evident in the Combine's concept of the Five Pillars and in its embracing of bushido.
Through many publications in the series, signs of trouble within the Combine are evident, such as the many minor cultures that have joined the combine. Throughout the Combines' history, fear of those that were also citizens of the combine caused many hard aches and prejudice towards those that did not follow the way of bushido. Through change of leadership throughout the Combine ruling body, starting with the coordinator and many other military and political leaders, many social changes were brought about for the greater good.

Famous quotes containing the word society:
“It is an esoteric doctrine of society that a little wickedness is good to make muscle; as if conscience were not good for hands and legs.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“In communist society, where nobody has one exclusive sphere of activity but each can become accomplished in any branch he wishes, society regulates the general production and thus makes it possible for me to do one thing today and another tomorrow, to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticize after dinner, just as I have a mind, without ever becoming hunter, fisherman, shepherd or critic.”
—Karl Marx (18181883)
“Solitude is impractical, and society fatal. We must keep our head in the one and our hands in the other. The conditions are met, if we keep our independence, yet do not lose our sympathy.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
