Douglas Dummett - Move To New Smyrna

Move To New Smyrna

Failing to adapt to city life in Tallahassee, Dummett returned to his home on the lagoon. In 1843 Dummett filed for a new homestead under the Armed Occupation Act and built his home near New Smyrna. Dummett became deputy collector for the nearby port and began a new romance. Contravening an 1832 Territorial Act, Dummett began a family with a young mulatto girl named Leandra Fernandez.

Famous quotes containing the words move to and/or move:

To higher or lower ends, they [the majority of mankind] move too often with something of a sad countenance, with hurried and ignoble gait, becoming, unconsciously, something like thorns, in their anxiety to bear grapes; it being possible for people, in the pursuit of even great ends, to become themselves thin and impoverished in spirit and temper, thus diminishing the sum of perfection in the world, at its very sources.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)

    Rocks crumble, make new forms,
    oceans move the continents,
mountains rise up and down like ghosts
yet all is natural, all is change.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
