Dorman (or Dohrman) is a surname originating in both England and Germany, with the spelling of Döhrmann more common in the latter; but largely found in Austria, the United States, Canada, Australia, Ukraine, Jamaica and France. The surname "Dorman" also derives from Middle English. The Middle English word dere, or deor, meant "wild animal". Therefore, Dorman translates as "wild animal", or, perhaps, "wild animal-man". Another, Old English, derivation is from the Old English word deor, meaning "dear", and, of course, mann, meaning "man": thus, Dear Man.
