Dominion of British West Florida

The Dominion of British West Florida is a separatist micronation founded in 2005 "on an eccentric interpretation of actual historic events" and based in the Gulf coast region of the United States. It claims the territory of the 18th century colony of West Florida, which has since been subsumed into the US states of Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

The Dominion claims to be "striving for Commonwealth status". The organization is neither acknowledged by any government nor exercises any authority over its claimed territory, and activities are largely limited to the internet.

Famous quotes containing the words dominion of, dominion, british, west and/or florida:

The great must submit to the dominion of prudence and of virtue, or none will long submit to the dominion of the great.
    Edmund Burke (1729–1797)

The hand that signed the treaty bred a fever,
    And famine grew, and locusts came;
Great is the hand that holds dominion over
    Man by a scribbled name.
    Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)

These battles sound incredible to us. I think that posterity will doubt if such things ever were,—if our bold ancestors who settled this land were not struggling rather with the forest shadows, and not with a copper-colored race of men. They were vapors, fever and ague of the unsettled woods. Now, only a few arrowheads are turned up by the plow. In the Pelasgic, the Etruscan, or the British story, there is nothing so shadowy and unreal.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

These emblems of twilight have seen at length,
And the man red-faced and tall seen, leaning
In the day of his strength
Not as a pine, but the stiff form
    Against the west pillar....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

    In Florida consider the flamingo,
Its color passion but its neck a question.
    Robert Penn Warren (1905–1989)
