Characters in "Dombey and Son"

• Mr Paul Dombey – one of the main male characters in Charles Dickens’s novel Dombey and Son. Mr. Dombey is an individual who had two children but lost his wife and only fancied his son Paul without paying much attention to his daughter Florence. His son Paul was to carry on the family namesake but died of an illness that resulted in Mr. Dombey’s hopes for a father and son business to be shattered. Dombey’s neglect of his daughter Florence resulted in him facing issues with not only his daughter but his new wife Edith as well. He was a man whose character was challenged by Edith and as a result, lost everything that he had worked for. He was also a man whose pride was attacked when his business acquaintance Mr. Carker had an affair with his wife and at the end of the novel, his world crumbled around him. Mr. Dombey finally came to the realization that his daughter was the only person who truly cared for him when he had nothing left and his view of Florence was ultimately changed which made him realize that he had missed out on a number of years with his daughter that he would never be capable of reliving.
