Dogsthorpe Star Pit is managed as a nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough, a charity formed in 1994. It is located north-east of Dogsthorpe and west of the village of Eye in the unitary authority area of Peterborough in the United Kingdom.
The brick pit was excavated to produce clay and has since developed into an important wildlife site. Many of Peterborough’s old clay pits have been used for landfill, but the discovery of the wildlife value of these pits has helped to secure their future as a nature reserves.
Famous quotes containing the words star and/or pit:
“The Star that bids the Shepherd fold,
Now the top of Heavn doth hold,
And the gilded Car of Day,
His glowing Axle doth allay
In the steep Atlantick stream,”
—John Milton (16081674)
“The great snake lies ever half awake, at the bottom of the pit of the world, curled
In folds of himself until he awakens in hunger and moving his head to right and to left prepares for his hour to devour.”
