Ditton Priors - The Church of St. John The Baptist

The Church of St. John The Baptist

St. John the Baptist is the church located in Ditton Priors and was dedicated to Saint Mary The Virgin in the 15th century. Parts of the church are thought to date back to the 12th century. The church is located in the centre of the village, on higher ground than its surroundings. The majority of the church is built from Dhustone, from the nearby Clee Hill. The interior of the church houses stained glass and an open timber roof. The churchyard contains a war grave of a King's Shropshire Light Infantry soldier of World War I.

Famous quotes containing the words church, john and/or baptist:

In my dreams is a country where the State is the Church and the Church the people: three in one and one in three. It is a commonwealth in which work is play and play is life: three in one and one in three. It is a temple in which the priest is the worshiper and the worshiper the worshipped: three in one and one in three. It is a godhead in which all life is human and all humanity divine: three in one and one in three.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

In the years of the Roman Republic, before the Christian era, Roman education was meant to produce those character traits that would make the ideal family man. Children were taught primarily to be good to their families. To revere gods, one’s parents, and the laws of the state were the primary lessons for Roman boys. Cicero described the goal of their child rearing as “self- control, combined with dutiful affection to parents, and kindliness to kindred.”
    —C. John Sommerville (20th century)

You should approach Joyce’s Ulysses as the illiterate Baptist preacher approaches the Old Testament: with faith.
    William Faulkner (1897–1962)
