Distinguished Young Women, formerly known as America's Junior Miss, is a national non-profit organization that provides scholarship opportunities to high school senior girls. Depending on the schedule of the various state and local programs, young women are eligible during the summer preceding their senior year in high school. This program is designed to provide young women with the opportunity and support needed to succeed before, during, and after attending college. Since its creation in 1958, over 700,000 young ladies have participated in competitions spanning the United States. Each state hosts a state program in which the chosen representative advances to the national program, held in the program's birthplace of Mobile, Alabama.
Famous quotes containing the words young and/or women:
“The young man reveres men of genius, because, to speak truly, they are more himself than he is.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“... women learned one important lessonnamely, that it is impossible for the best of men to understand womens feelings or the humiliation of their position. When they asked us to be silent on our question during the War, and labor for the emancipation of the slave, we did so, and gave five years to his emancipation and enfranchisement.... I was convinced, at the time, that it was the true policy. I am now equally sure that it was a blunder.”
—Elizabeth Cady Stanton (18151902)
