Diss Railway Station

Diss Railway Station

Diss is a railway station which serves the town of Diss in Norfolk, England. The station is on the Great Eastern Main Line 20 miles (32 km) south of Norwich towards London Liverpool Street. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by Greater Anglia. There were formerly a number of stations between Diss and Norwich, but these were all shut during the Beeching Axe in favour of speedier journey times. It was once between Burston and Mellis on the Great Eastern Main Line. Its postcode is IP22 4HN. It has a waiting room on each platform; toilets on the London side (Platform 1). It has a ticket office, and ticket machines for when the ticket office is closed, one located on each platform.

The old station master's house, which is part of the station and mostly the stations upstairs accommodation, is currently in use privately, for one of the towns taxi companies.

Because of its location, Diss is the only station on the Greater Anglia network to be exclusively served by Intercity trains. This means it is also one of a small number of stations in the UK to only be served by Intercity trains.

Famous quotes containing the words railway and/or station:

Her personality had an architectonic quality; I think of her when I see some of the great London railway termini, especially St. Pancras, with its soot and turrets, and she overshadowed her own daughters, whom she did not understand—my mother, who liked things to be nice; my dotty aunt. But my mother had not the strength to put even some physical distance between them, let alone keep the old monster at emotional arm’s length.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)

Say first, of God above, or Man below,
What can we reason, but from what we know?
Of Man what see we, but his station here,
From which to reason, or to which refer?
Thro’ worlds unnumber’d tho’ the God be known,
‘Tis ours to trace him only in our own.

    Alexander Pope (1688–1744)
