Devon and Somerset Railway

The Devon and Somerset Railway (D&SR) was a cross-country line from Norton Fitzwarren in Somerset to Barnstaple in Devon, England. It was opened between 1871 and 1873, and closed in 1966. Although an independent company until 1901, it was operated from the outset by the Bristol and Exeter Railway (B&ER) which was part of the Great Western Railway (GWR) from 1876.

Famous quotes containing the words somerset and/or railway:

The crown of literature is poetry. It is its end and aim. It is the sublimest activity of the human mind. It is the achievement of beauty and delicacy. The writer of prose can only step aside when the poet passes.
    —W. Somerset Maugham (1874–1966)

Her personality had an architectonic quality; I think of her when I see some of the great London railway termini, especially St. Pancras, with its soot and turrets, and she overshadowed her own daughters, whom she did not understand—my mother, who liked things to be nice; my dotty aunt. But my mother had not the strength to put even some physical distance between them, let alone keep the old monster at emotional arm’s length.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)
