Derby Grammar School - School Motto and Badge

School Motto and Badge

The school crest, badge and motto are based on, and reminiscent of those of Derby School. The school motto, Vita Sine Litteris Mors (Life without learning is death), is taken from the motto of the former school and is from Seneca's Epistulae morales ad Lucilium.

Famous quotes containing the words school, motto and/or badge:

I go to school to youth to learn the future.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

My friend devotes himself to his life, whenever he can find the spare time. His motto is: ‘Don’t just sit there: live!’ So he’s too busy to stand, to walk, to do anything, except to live. He even refused to kiss a girl, when invited, on the grounds that it was time again to be living. Schedules are sacred to him.
Marvin Cohen, U.S. author and humorist. The Self-Devoted Friend, New Directions (1967)

Signor Antonio, many a time and oft
In the Rialto you have rated me
About my moneys and my usances.
Still have I borne it with a patient shrug,
For sufferance is the badge of all our tribe.
You call me misbeliever, cutthroat dog,
And spit upon my Jewish gaberdine,
And all for use of that which is mine own.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
