Derby D'Italia

The Derby d'Italia (Italian for "Derby of Italy") is biannual football fixture in Italian football between Internazionale of Milan and Juventus of Turin. The term was coined back in 1967 by the famous Italian sports journalist Gianni Brera.

The matchup between Juventus and Inter is perhaps the most intense match in Italy between two teams from different cities. The two teams are also ranked first and second in wins and goals in Serie A history. Up until 2005, the match featured the only two clubs who have never been relegated from the Serie A. Juventus was eventually relegated in 2006 due to its involvement in the Calciopoli fixing matches scandal.

From a non-sporting perspective, it is also a regional rivalry, the teams being from the two biggest cities in Northwest Italy and two of the most industralised in the country. Incidents from this fixture have occasionally made its way into political debates as Turin and Milan and their respective regions have mostly been ruled by opposing parties.
