Derby Della Lanterna - Background

Background

The derby's name is derived from the Torre della Lanterna, the ancient landmark and the main lighthouse for the city's port. Regarding their fan base the two teams have some differences. Genoa supporters are found predominantly in the heart of the city, with their Sampdoria counterparts in the peripheral areas. Although not as high profile as crosstown derbies such as that of Milan and Rome, tensions remain high between both sets of supporters. The rivalry is also fueled by the fact that Genoa is the more established and is Italy's oldest football club while Sampdoria is the country's newest continuously operating club.

    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

    Emma Goldman (1869–1940)
