Denis of Cork - 2008 Belmont Stakes

2008 Belmont Stakes

Denis Of Cork skipped the Preakness Stakes so that he could return for the Belmont Stakes fresher than the horses who stuck with the Triple Crown trail. This paid off, as he finished 2nd behind the upset-winner, Da' Tara.

However, when Denis of Cork returned from the Belmont Stakes, it was discovered that the colt had suffered from a pre-condylar fracture in one of his hind ankles. After this was discovered, the colt was sidelined for the rest of the season.

Famous quotes containing the words belmont and/or stakes:

An actor must communicate his author’s given message—comedy, tragedy, serio- comedy; then comes his unique moment, as he is confronted by the looked-for, yet at times unexpected, reaction of the audience. This split second is his; he is in command of his medium; the effect vanishes into thin air; but that moment has a power all its own and, like power in any form, is stimulating and alluring.
    —Eleanor Robson Belmont (1878–1979)

This man was very clever and quick to learn anything in his line. Our tent was of a kind new to him; but when he had once seen it pitched, it was surprising how quickly he would find and prepare the pole and forked stakes to pitch it with, cutting and placing them right the first time, though I am sure that the majority of white men would have blundered several times.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
