Personal Life

Lewis is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and was elected president while at University of Kansas.

Lewis and his wife, the former Gayle Carolyn Jones, were married in 1960, and they have four sons: Delano, Jr., Geoffrey, Brian, and Phill.

Among the many civic awards Lewis has earned, The Washingtonian named him as a "Washingtonian of the Year" in 1978. A Baptist by birth, he converted to Roman Catholicism when he married. Lewis was awarded Catholic University's President's Medal, also in 1978. In January 2009, he was celebrated as Kansan of the Year.
