Defense Industry

The defence industry, also called the military industry, comprises government and commercial industry involved in research, development, production, and service of military materiel, equipment and facilities. It includes:

  • Defense contractors: business organizations or individuals that provide products or services to a military department of a government
  • The Arms industry, which produces guns, ammunition, missiles, military aircraft, and their associated consumables and systems

It can also include:

  • Private military contractors: private companies that provide logistics, manpower, and other expenditures for a military force
  • European defence procurement, which is more or less analogous to the U.S. "military-industrial complex"

Famous quotes containing the words defense and/or industry:

    There’s no telling what might have happened to our defense budget if Saddam Hussein hadn’t invaded Kuwait that August and set everyone gearing up for World War II½. Can we count on Saddam Hussein to come along every year and resolve our defense-policy debates? Given the history of the Middle East, it’s possible.
    —P.J. (Patrick Jake)

    He had much industry at setting out,
    Much boisterous courage, before loneliness
    Had driven him crazed;
    For meditations upon unknown thought
    Make human intercourse grow less and less....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
