Defense Act of 1920 - Enhanced National Guard and Reserve Role

Enhanced National Guard and Reserve Role

The 1920 Act strengthened the National Guard and Reserve in several ways. First, it directed that the Chief of the Militia Bureau be a National Guard officer as a way to better coordinate activities between the Army General Staff and the National Guard. Second, it permitted National Guard officers to serve on the Army's General Staff, enhancing their training opportunities and exeprience, and increasing the exposure of regular Army officers to the National Guard. Third, it required that the Army Staff create joint committees of Guard, Reserve and regular Army officers when considering actions that would affect the Guard Reserve, thus giving the Guard and Reserve input into plans and policies that could affect them.

Famous quotes containing the words enhanced, national, guard, reserve and/or role:

Art is beauty, and every exposition of art, whether it be music, painting, or the drama, should be subservient to that one great end. As long as nature is a means to the attainment of beauty, so-called realism is necessary and permissable [sic], but it must be realism enhanced by idealism and uplifted by the spirit of an inner life or purpose.
    Julia Marlowe (1866–1950)

But for the national welfare, it is urgent to realize that the minorities do think, and think about something other than the race problem.
    Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960)

    Then the bird
breaks with his beak the thread
    of dream within him,
    and the tree unrolls
the shadow that will guard it
    throughout the day.
    Denise Levertov (b. 1923)

One should never make one’s debut with a scandal. One should reserve that to give an interest to one’s old age.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

Our role is to support anything positive in black life and destroy anything negative that touches it. You have no other reason for being. I don’t understand art for art’s sake. Art is the guts of the people.
    Elma Lewis (b. 1921)
