Deaf President Now - Protest

Protest

The protesters presented the Board of Trustees with four demands:

  • Zinser's resignation and the selection of a Deaf person as president;
  • the immediate resignation of Jane Bassett Spilman, chair of the Board of Trustees (who, it was alleged, announced the board's choice with the comment that "the Deaf are not yet ready to function in the hearing world");
  • the reconstitution of the Board of Trustees with a 51% majority of Deaf members (at the time, it was composed of 17 hearing members and 4 Deaf members);
  • there would be no reprisals against any students or staff members involved in the protest.

Famous quotes containing the word protest:

    [University students] hated the hypocrisy of adult society, the rigidity of its political institutions, the impersonality of its bureaucracies. They sought to create a society that places human values before materialistic ones, that has a little less head and a little more heart, that is dominated by self-interest and loves its neighbor more. And they were persuaded that group protest of a militant nature would advance those goals.
    Muriel Beadle (b. 1915)

    To exist is equivalent to an act of faith, a protest against the truth, an interminable prayer.... As soon as they consent to live, the unbeliever and the man of faith are fundamentally the same, since both have made the only decision that defines a being.
    E.M. Cioran (b. 1911)

    I protest that if some great Power would agree to make me always think what is true and do what is right, on condition of being turned into a sort of clock and would up every morning before I got out of bed, I should instantly close with the offer.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)
