Dead Man's Hand

The make up of poker's dead man's hand has varied through the years. Currently, the dead man's hand is described as a two-pair poker hand consisting of black aces and eights. Famous quotes containing the words dead, man and/or hand:

I’d rather I were dead and gone,
And my body laid in grave,
    Ere a rusty stock o coal-black smith
    My maidenhead should have.
Unknown. The Twa Magicians (l. 17–20)

If God bestowed immortality on every man then when he made him, and he made many to whom he never purposed to give his saving grace, what did his Lordship think that God gave any man immortality with purpose only to make him capable of immortal torments? It is a hard saying, and I think cannot piously be believed. I am sure it can never be proved by the canonical Scripture.
    Thomas Hobbes (1579–1688)

If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and to be thrown into the eternal fire.
    Bible: New Testament, Matthew 18:8.
