Daybreak (painting) - Record Purchase Price

Record Purchase Price

The painting has always been in private ownership. On May 25, 2006, Daybreak was purchased by a private collector (Mel Gibson's wife, Robyn) at auction at Christie's for US$7.6 million. This set a record price for a Parrish painting. It was sold again on May 21, 2010 for US$5.2 million.

Famous quotes containing the words record, purchase and/or price:

    Human beings are compelled to live within a lie, but they can be compelled to do so only because they are in fact capable of living in this way. Therefore not only does the system alienate humanity, but at the same time alienated humanity supports this system as its own involuntary masterplan, as a degenerate image of its own degeneration, as a record of people’s own failure as individuals.
    Václav Havel (b. 1936)

    How happy a thing were a wedding,
    And a bedding,
    If a man might purchase a wife
    For a twelvemonth and a day;
    Thomas Flatman (1637–1688)

    ... work is only part of a man’s life; play, family, church, individual and group contacts, educational opportunities, the intelligent exercise of citizenship, all play a part in a well-rounded life. Workers are men and women with potentialities for mental and spiritual development as well as for physical health. We are paying the price today of having too long sidestepped all that this means to the mental, moral, and spiritual health of our nation.
    Mary Barnett Gilson (1877–?)
