David Vanian - Career

Career

Lett changed his name to Dave Vanian (pronounced as in "Transylvanian") when he became a musician, having previously worked as a gravedigger.

He was one of the early influencers of gothic fashion by wearing dark and otherworldly clothing both on-stage and off. In November 1976, the British music magazine, NME, commented that Vanian "resembles a runaway from The Addams Family".

He has kept his personal life out of the limelight, even opting out of any input towards The Damned biography The Light At The End Of The Tunnel by Carol Clerk, he also leads the rockabilly band David Vanian & the Phantom Chords. He is known to be a fan of renaissance art, film noir and horror movies.

Vanian hosted Dave Vanian's Dark Screen on the UK-based television channel Rockworld TV, to which viewers sent their self-made horror films in the hope of winning prizes.

In 2004, he and Captain Sensible turned on the Christmas lights in Cambridge, causing some controversy.

In 2009, he composed the soundtrack for the film, The Perfect Sleep.

Famous quotes containing the word career:

Like the old soldier of the ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty. Goodbye.
    Douglas MacArthur (1880–1964)

I began my editorial career with the presidency of Mr. Adams, and my principal object was to render his administration all the assistance in my power. I flattered myself with the hope of accompanying him through [his] voyage, and of partaking in a trifling degree, of the glory of the enterprise; but he suddenly tacked about, and I could follow him no longer. I therefore waited for the first opportunity to haul down my sails.
    William Cobbett (1762–1835)

Clearly, society has a tremendous stake in insisting on a woman’s natural fitness for the career of mother: the alternatives are all too expensive.
    Ann Oakley (b. 1944)
