Sporting Career

Curling made its first appearance at an Olympic Games at the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France. Four teams took part, one from Great Britain, one from France and two teams from Sweden. The British team was made up entirely of curlers from Scotland, including D. G. Astley. The British team won both of its matches, winning the gold medal. In the playoff match between the second Swedish team and the French team, with Astley joining the Swedish team. This resulted in Astley winning a gold medal for Britain and a silver medal for Sweden, resulting in him winning two medals for the same event at a single Olympic Games, the only time this has ever occurred.

At the time of the event, the participants thought that they had participated in a demonstration event, although the International Olympic Committee never designated it as one.

Famous quotes containing the words sporting and/or career:

The Boston papers had never told me that there were seals in the harbor. I had always associated these with the Esquimaux and other outlandish people. Ladies who never walk in the woods, sail over the sea. To go to sea! Why, it is to have the experience of Noah,—to realize the deluge. Every vessel is an ark.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

I doubt that I would have taken so many leaps in my own writing or been as clear about my feminist and political commitments if I had not been anointed as early as I was. Some major form of recognition seems to have to mark a woman’s career for her to be able to go out on a limb without having her credentials questioned.
    Ruth Behar (b. 1956)
