Royalty Connection
Von Buhler’s family is rumored to be descended from the royal Italian Sforza family. ‘When asked what I wanted my e-mail address to be, I said off-the-cuff, “Countess.” Countesses aren’t prissy like Princesses. Countesses know the score! In a manifesto von Buhler wrote in 2001 she explains why she has a title. “But is there really royal blood in my veins? My grandmother’s maiden name is Sforza, and the rumor in the family is that we are related to the infamous Francesco Sforza of Milan, known for treachery, hiring Leonardo Da Vinci as his plumber, beautiful mistresses, and a delicious Italian nougat candy called Torrone.” A friend began referring to the gothic Victorian house as Castle von Buhler and the name stuck. When Cynthia married Adam Buhler in 1995, she decided to add “von” to her name: “I couldn’t take someone else’s name and still feel like myself…so I dubbed myself Cynthia von Buhler. (The “von” took the place of my non-existent middle name.) ”

Famous quotes containing the words royalty and/or connection:
“If there be no nobility of descent in a nation, all the more indispensable is it that there should be nobility of ascenta character in them that bear rule, so fine and high and pure, that as men come within the circle of its influence, they involuntarily pay homage to that which is the one pre-eminent distinction, the Royalty of Virtue.”
—Henry Codman Potter (18351908)
“We should always remember that the work of art is invariably the creation of a new world, so that the first thing we should do is to study that new world as closely as possible, approaching it as something brand new, having no obvious connection with the worlds we already know. When this new world has been closely studied, then and only then let us examine its links with other worlds, other branches of knowledge.”
—Vladimir Nabokov (18991977)
