Recovery Efforts

Like all Bahamian rock iguanas, this species is protected in the Bahamas under the Wild Animals Protection Act of 1968. Since 1995, Shedd Aquarium has allowed volunteers to help survey populations of Exuma Island Iguanas as a form of ecotourism. Shedd maintains an in situ as well as an ex situ captive breeding program in order to aid the recovery of Exuma Island Iguanas. In 2002, Shedd Aquarium translocated sixteen Exuma Island Iguanas to the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park in an effort to establish the species in a protected area.

The Bahamian Government sponsors no official captive breeding or conservation program for the Exuma Island Iguana.

Famous quotes containing the words recovery and/or efforts:

With any recovery from morbidity there must go a certain healthy humiliation.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)

Fanny was not there! How she would have enjoyed the scene.... I could not but think of her, and in spite of my efforts to prevent, the unbidden tear would flow. Alas! I cannot feel the satisfaction some appear to do in the reflection that her eyes beheld the scene from the other world.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
