Cyclone - Other Planets

Other Planets

Cyclones are not unique to Earth. Cyclonic storms are common on Jovian planets, such as the Small Dark Spot on Neptune. Also known as the Wizard's Eye, it is about one third the diameter of the Great Dark Spot. It received the name "Wizard's Eye" because it looks like an eye. This appearance is caused by a white cloud in the middle of the Wizard's Eye. Mars has also exhibited cyclonic storms. Jovian storms like the Great Red Spot are usually mistakenly named as giant hurricanes or cyclonic storms. However, this is inaccurate, as the Great Red Spot is, in fact, the inverse phenomenon, an anticyclone.

Famous quotes containing the word planets:

Marriage is the clue to human life, but there is no marriage apart from the wheeling sun and the nodding earth, from the straying of the planets and the magnificence of the fixed stars.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

Why are all these dolls falling out of the sky?
    Was there a father?
Or have the planets cut holes in their nets
    and let our childhood out,
or are we the dolls themselves,
    born but never fed?
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
