Usefulness of Erroneous Formulas

These erroneous formulas are likely of more than just historical interest since they tend to point the way to more accurate formulas. The k/R type formulas imply that the curve resistance increases with decreasing radius (and conversely). The use of the unbalanced lateral force, pushing the train sideways, implies that this is an important force to consider. But while the curve resistance may well be some function of this force, the experimental results show it is not a linear one.

Famous quotes containing the words usefulness of, usefulness, erroneous and/or formulas:

The usefulness of madmen is famous: they demonstrate society’s logic flagrantly carried out down to its last scrimshaw scrap.
    Cynthia Ozick (b. 1928)

There has been and always will be plenty of arguments about the usefulness and harm of the spreading of the Bible. In my view the Bible will continue to cause harm when used in a dogmatic and fantastic manner; it will do good when used for didactic purposes and with sensitivity.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)

Men have an extraordinarily erroneous opinion of their position in nature; and the error is ineradicable.
    W. Somerset Maugham (1874–1966)

That’s the great danger of sectarian opinions, they always accept the formulas of past events as useful for the measurement of future events and they never are, if you have high standards of accuracy.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)
