Geology

The rocks comprising Cumberland Caverns are likely part of the Monteagle Limestone, formed during the Missippian Period. This supposition is based on the formation's relative stratigraphic location in the general area; on the fact that, for various lithologic and stratigraphic reasons, the Monteagle is known to be quite cavernous (see http://nature.nps.gov/geology/parks/obri/index.cfm); on hand samples observed near the cave entrance by this writer; and on USGS descriptions of Warren County geologic formations, and, in particular, formation thicknesses (viewable at http://mrdata.usgs.gov/geology/state/fips-unit.php?code=f47177). Further professional confirmation that the Monteagle Limestone is a primary lithology in Cumberland Caverns would be welcomed.
