The Culture of Basilan are derived from the Yakan, Tausug and the Chavacano tribes in the southern Philippines. Both Yakans and Tausugs are predominantly Muslim, joined by their kin from the Sama, Bajao, Maranao, and other Muslim tribes of Mindanao, while Chavacanos are primarily Christian, joined by the predominantly Christian tribes of the Bisaya, Ilocano, Tagalog and others. These three main groups, however, represent Basilan's tri-people community.

Famous quotes containing the word culture:
“The best hopes of any community rest upon that class of its gifted young men who are not encumbered with large possessions.... I now speak of extensive scholarship and ripe culture in science and art.... It is not large possessions, it is large expectations, or rather large hopes, that stimulate the ambition of the young.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
