Culper Ring - Benedict Arnold

Benedict Arnold

Tallmadge was Washington's trusted contact/courier at his HQ to the Connecticut contacts of the Culper ring and other spies. When Major John Andre was captured, his papers showing Arnold's treason were brought to Tallmadge's Dragoons. He knew to immediately forward them to Washington, but Tallmadge's commander had already sent a note telling of the capture of Andre to Arnold. Arnold immediately escaped to the British ship down the Hudson, before anyone else knew what was happening.

Famous quotes containing the words benedict and/or arnold:

    We have not the motive to prepare ourselves for a “life-work” of teaching, of social work—we know that we would lay it down with hallelujah in the height of our success, to make a home for the right man. And all the time in the background of our consciousness rings the warning that perhaps the right man will never come. A great love is given to very few. Perhaps this make-shift time filler of a job is our life work after all.
    —Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)

    Years hence, perhaps, may dawn an age,
    More fortunate, alas! than we,
    Which without hardness will be sage,
    And gay without frivolity.
    Sons of the world, oh, speed those years;
    But, while we wait, allow our tears!
    —Matthew Arnold (1822–1888)
