Special Edition
The second edition published by Underwood–Miller comprised "550 signed and numbered copies". It was published eight months after the regular hardcover edition.
For its sequel Rhialto the Marvellous (1984), the special edition by Brandywyne Books ("Slipcased, signed and limited to 1000 copies") preceded by three months the regular hardcover edition by Timescape Books. Fabian and Johnson were the two cover artists in both instances.
In the articles about both books, the upper-right inset provides bibliographic data for both editions.
The first and last books published by Underwood-Miller (1976 and 1994) were special editions of the first Dying Earth book. Underwood later did a special edition of the second book under the new title The Laughing Magician (1998).

Famous quotes containing the words special and/or edition:
“It is surely a matter of common observation that a man who knows no one thing intimately has no views worth hearing on things in general. The farmer philosophizes in terms of crops, soils, markets, and implements, the mechanic generalizes his experiences of wood and iron, the seaman reaches similar conclusions by his own special road; and if the scholar keeps pace with these it must be by an equally virile productivity.”
—Charles Horton Cooley (18641929)
“Books have their destinies like men. And their fates, as made by generations of readers, are very different from the destinies foreseen for them by their authors. Gullivers Travels, with a minimum of expurgation, has become a childrens book; a new illustrated edition is produced every Christmas. Thats what comes of saying profound things about humanity in terms of a fairy story.”
—Aldous Huxley (18941963)
