Croydon University Hospital, formerly Mayday Hospital is a large NHS hospital in the borough of Croydon in south London, England, and is in the administrative area of NHS Croydon - Croydon Primary Care Trust. It is administratively a part of Croydon Health Services NHS Trust.
It is a District General Hospital with a 24-hour accident and emergency department. The hospital is based on a 19-acre (77,000 m2) site in Thornton Heath to the north of central Croydon. The most recent large building project was the Jubilee Wing, opened in December 2004.
Its facilities include 670 beds, eight operating theatres, a day surgery suite with three theatres, two obstetric theatres and recovery room, and overnight facilities for parents. Croydon Health Services NHS Trust is developing an application for Foundation Trust status.
The hospital's roots are as the infirmary of Croydon Workhouse, opened in 1885 in Mayday Road to replace the previous infirmary in Duppas Hill, the workhouse itself having moved to Thornton Heath in 1866. The Croydon Union Infirmary was renamed Mayday Road Hospital in 1923, and was taken over by Croydon Corporation in 1930, and the National Health Service in 1948.
It was renamed Croydon University Hospital in August 2010.
