The Ochre Horse
A bone engraved with a horse's head and other worked bone items along with the remains of a wide variety of prehistoric animals have been found in excavations from 1876 to the present day. The "Ochre Horse" was found on 29 June 1876 at the back of the western chamber in the 'Robin Hood Cave'. Early excavations were carried out by Professor Sir William Boyd Dawkins, who wrote several papers on his findings.
In 2003, the Ochre Horse was estimated to be between 11,000 and 13,000 years old. The site is open to the public and there is a visitor's centre. The Pinhole Cave Man with a human figure engraved on bone was discovered in the 1920s.

Famous quotes containing the word horse:
“It is possible that the telephone has been responsible for more business inefficiency than any other agency except laudanum.... In the old days when you wanted to get in touch with a man you wrote a note, sprinkled it with sand, and gave it to a man on horseback. It probably was delivered within half an hour, depending on how big a lunch the horse had had. But in these busy days of rush-rush-rush, it is sometimes a week before you can catch your man on the telephone.”
—Robert Benchley (18891945)
