Crested Auklet - Conservation Status

Conservation Status

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Crested Auklets are of least concern. The global population is estimated to be 6 million individuals, while the North American population is estimated at 2.9 million birds. However, an accurate assessment of the number of birds is difficult, since those on the surface of the colony and in the nearby sea is only a small proportion of the variable and poorly understood population. Even though the global concern is limited, there is more concern for the North American population, specifically in Alaska. There has been high predation by rats, which have escaped fishing vessels in the harbor.Their main predators are gulls, Arctic fox and Common Ravens. They have also been reported in the stomachs of halibut caught on St. Lawrence Island. Additionally, oil spills and collisions with light sources pose additional risk. In Alaska, there is also some subsistence hunting of Crested Auklets.

Famous quotes containing the words conservation and/or status:

A country grows in history not only because of the heroism of its troops on the field of battle, it grows also when it turns to justice and to right for the conservation of its interests.
    Aristide Briand (1862–1932)

Recent studies that have investigated maternal satisfaction have found this to be a better prediction of mother-child interaction than work status alone. More important for the overall quality of interaction with their children than simply whether the mother works or not, these studies suggest, is how satisfied the mother is with her role as worker or homemaker. Satisfied women are consistently more warm, involved, playful, stimulating and effective with their children than unsatisfied women.
    Alison Clarke-Stewart (20th century)
