The National Skills Academy hold several events throughout the year including Offstage Choices. In Autumn 2010 the Skills Academy ran 25 careers events across the nation delivering practical and informative day programmes focused on backstage, technical and administrative roles available in the industry. NSA Founder Colleges and Industry Members work together to present teenagers with the opportunity to get a taster of what happens behind the stage of the world’s biggest events.
The Skills Academy is developing a new technical theatre, events and music training centre called The Backstage Centre in Purfleet, Essex, as part of High House Production Park at High House Purfleet. The building will house training that cannot currently be delivered nationally due to space and time restrictions in existing technical theatre training and performance spaces, and will expose learners to top level, world class technical theatre and live music professionals, companies and bands in a unique training environment. Students from South Essex College will also use the space. The design incorporates a large main space of 875m² with a 17m ceiling and a number of other training spaces including a CAD studio, lighting and audio-visual training studios, generic training spaces, a recording studio and band rehearsal room. These spaces will offer access to a wide variety of technical performance media and support transferability of skills and knowledge. The building will be open for business in May 2012 in time to engage with Olympic ceremonies and training activities.
http://getintotheatre.org is the NSA's website for young people with information about careers in backstage theatre and live events. It includes features such as 'meet the professionals', where users can ask people questions already working in the industry. In June 2011 it was joined by http://getintolivemusic.org, which does the same thing for young people interested in pursuing a career in live music.

Famous quotes containing the words national, skills, academy, creative and/or cultural:
“It is not unkind to say, from the standpoint of scenery alone, that if many, and indeed most, of our American national parks were to be set down on the continent of Europe thousands of Americans would journey all the way across the ocean in order to see their beauties.”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt (18821945)
“Play for young children is not recreation activity,... It is not leisure-time activity nor escape activity.... Play is thinking time for young children. It is language time. Problem-solving time. It is memory time, planning time, investigating time. It is organization-of-ideas time, when the young child uses his mind and body and his social skills and all his powers in response to the stimuli he has met.”
—James L. Hymes, Jr. (20th century)
“The academy is not paradise. But learning is a place where paradise can be created.”
—bell hooks (b. c. 1955)
“Nobody knows what the cause is,
Though some pretend they do;
Its like some hidden assassin
Waiting to strike at you.
Childless women get it,
And men when they retire;
Its as if there had to be some outlet
For their foiled creative fire.”
—W.H. (Wystan Hugh)
“To recover the fatherhood idea, we must fashion a new cultural story of fatherhood. The moral of todays story is that fatherhood is superfluous. The moral of the new story must be that fatherhood is essential.”
—David Blankenhorn (20th century)
