History
Cream was originally founded by Joseph Mullen, James Barton, Darren Hughes and Andy Carroll and Saturday October 17, 1992 changed clubland forever. This was the date that 424 innocent scouse party heads came together in a club in Wolstenholme Square, Liverpool, that was offering an alternative to what was happening down the M62 at Manchester’s Hacienda. Nobody in that room, not even the promoters imagined that 18 years on, Cream would become the global pioneer for electronic music that it is today .
Cream's is a story which has touched millions, changing the lives of the people who work there, the clubbers who religiously attended week in week out and indeed the DJ's who have gone on to be some of today's most influential artists.
Launched during the dance music boom as a haven for young people to spend their Saturday night’s listening and dancing to music. Cream soon grew to attract over 3000 people every week from around the UK who saw it as a lifestyle and not just a source of entertainment.
Not wanting to keep the success story exclusive to Liverpool in 1994 Cream staged its first international event in Ibiza and continues to host one of the biggest club nights on the island at the award winning club Amnesia, and has become the longest running UK Club night to stage events on the party isle. With Ibiza’s cosmopolitan crowd the Cream story soon began to spread around the world and the company was soon organising events in places as varied as Buenos Aires to Moscow. The company now stages over 100 events annually and its international activity has gone on to become one of the company’s greatest achievements.
Buoyed by the growth of the brand the company decided to attack the outdoor event business, and in 1998 Creamfields was launched into the UK festival market. Over the last 15 years Creamfields has gone on to become the world’s biggest dance festival, staging events from Spain, Czech Republic, Romania, Poland, Russia, Chile, Brazil, Australia and Argentina where it has become the biggest 1 day dance festival in Latin America. www.creamfields.com
On top of its busy international activity, Cream continues to host a handful of sell out shows a year at its spiritual home Nation in Liverpool, and most recently celebrated its 20th Anniversary with two parties with a line up that included the likes of Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Steve Angello, Paul van Dyk, Eddie Halliwell and Paul Bleasdale to name a few.
Over the last 20 years Cream has gone from strength to strength and demonstrated its ability to stretch beyond its beginnings whilst never losing sight of its most important assets…its creative vision and its loyal fanbase, which probably explains why it’s become one of the most instantly recognisable youth brands in the world….not bad for a small underground club night!
An early forerunner to Cream were the nights held at Club 051 where Andy Carroll and James Barton DJ'd and ran nights playing a mix of US and UK house music. Carroll and Barton held some ground breaking events bringing US legend Tony Humphries, the now legendary Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Laurent Garnier and debuting a lesser known DJ at that time Allister Whitehead to name a few. Those nights moved on and Cream was born.
Paul Bleasdale was the main resident DJ at Cream from its beginnings in 1992 to the end of the weekly nights in 2002.
