Signs
Infection with Aphanomyces astaci is accompanied by few signs in its early stages, and the first indication of infection may be mortality. In the later stages, the muscles of the tail may appear whitened, or brownish-red where blood cells have encapsulated the hyphae. The effects of the neurotoxins in the oömycete can include appearing in daytime (crayfish are typically nocturnal) and a lack of co-ordination.

Famous quotes containing the word signs:
“The good of a book lies in its being read. A book is made up of signs that speak of other signs, which in their turn speak of things. Without an eye to read them, a book contains signs that produce no concepts; therefore it is dumb.”
—Umberto Eco (b. 1932)
“Wherever I look, I see signs of the commandment to honor ones parents and nowhere of a commandment that calls for the respect of a child.”
—Alice Miller (20th century)
“Surrealism is a bourgeois disaffection; that its militants thought it universal is only one of the signs that it is typically bourgeois.”
—Susan Sontag (b. 1933)
