Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement

The Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) is the instrument designed to correct Hubble Space Telescope's spherical aberration for light focused at the FOC, FOS and GHRS instruments. Built by Ball Aerospace Corp., it replaced the High Speed Photometer (HSP) during the first Hubble Servicing Mission in 1993. Later instruments, installed after HST's initial deployment, were designed with their own corrective optics.

COSTAR was removed from HST in 2009 during the fifth servicing mission and replaced by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. It is now on exhibit in the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

  • Astronauts work on installing Hubble's corrective optics during Servicing Mission 1.

Famous quotes containing the words space, telescope and/or replacement:

There is commonly sufficient space about us. Our horizon is never quite at our elbows.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The telescope at one end of his beat,
And at the other end the microscope....
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

Not even the visionary or mystical experience ever lasts very long. It is for art to capture that experience, to offer it to, in the case of literature, its readers; to be, for a secular, materialist culture, some sort of replacement for what the love of god offers in the world of faith.
    Salman Rushdie (b. 1947)
