Politics

The Corby constituency contains parts of traditionally Conservative East Northamptonshire that balance the traditionally Labour town of Corby leading to a marginal constituency that has gone to the party forming the national government in every general election since the creation of the constituency in 1983. In the 2005 General Election, Labour won Corby by a majority of just over 1,000. At the 2010 General Election, the sitting Labour MP Phil Hope lost this seat to Louise Bagshawe, the Conservative Party candidate, who is now Louise Mensch after her marriage. Corby Borough Council has been controlled by the Labour party since 1979. In 2011 the council had 22 Labour representatives, 4 Conservatives and 3 Liberal Democrats.

The 2012 by-election triggered by the resignation of Louise Mensch after two years at her post was won by Labour's Andy Sawford by a large majority. The by-election was of large national and international media interest due the nature of the constituency being a swing-state. During the wait for the results announcement, "Corby" briefly trended worldwide on Twitter. Notably, UKIP ranked in third place in the by-election whilst Liberal Democrats positioned fourth, losing their deposit in the process.

Famous quotes containing the word politics:

All politics takes place on a slippery slope. The most important four words in politics are “up to a point.”
    George F. Will (b. 1941)

The trouble with Nixon is that he’s a serious politics junkie. He’s totally hooked ... and like any other junkie, he’s a bummer to have around: especially as President.
    Hunter S. Thompson (b. 1939)

Our democracy, our culture, our whole way of life is a spectacular triumph of the blah. Why not have a political convention without politics to nominate a leader who’s out in front of nobody?... Maybe our national mindlessness is the very thing that keeps us from turning into one of those smelly European countries full of pseudo-reds and crypto-fascists and greens who dress like forest elves.
