In the Spanish Reconquista Christian populations were often brought to an area with the goal of establishing a Christian base, one that would be loyal to the Crown of Castile and whose culture would supplant that of the subjugated Moorish peoples; for example Murcia. During the process of Christianization, many of the conquered city’s mosques were destroyed or converted into Catholic churches, typically the great Friday mosques were converted, such as the Great Mosque of Cordoba converted into a cathedral in 1236.
