Constraint

Constraint

Constraint is the element factor or a subsystem that works as a bottleneck. It restricts an entity, project, or system (such as a manufacturing or decision making process) from achieving its potential (or higher level of output) with reference to its goal. Constraint may refer to:

  • Theory of Constraints, in business management
  • Loading gauge or structure gauge (constraints in engineering)
  • A constraint on constrained writing, in literature
    • For example, Oulipian constraints

Famous quotes containing the word constraint:

In America a woman loses her independence for ever in the bonds of matrimony. While there is less constraint on girls there than anywhere else, a wife submits to stricter obligations. For the former, her father’s house is a home of freedom and pleasure; for the latter, her husband’s is almost a cloister.
    Alexis de Tocqueville (1805–1859)
