Constance of France, Countess of Toulouse - First Marriage

First Marriage

In 1140, Constance married Eustace IV, Count of Boulogne. Eustace was knighted in 1147, at which date he was probably from sixteen to eighteen years of age. In 1151 he joined Constance's brother, Louis in an abortive raid upon Normandy, which had accepted the title of the Empress Matilda (another of many Matildas of the era), and was now defended by her husband, Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou.

The couple had no children and Eustace died in 1153, aged between 17–26.

Famous quotes containing the word marriage:

My husband sings Baa Baa black sheep and we pretend
that all’s certain and good, that the marriage won’t end.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

All married couples should learn the art of battle as they should learn the art of making love. Good battle is objective and honest—never vicious or cruel. Good battle is healthy and constructive, and brings to a marriage the principle of equal partnership.
    Ann Landers (b. 1918)
