The .CDF file extension more commonly denotes the Computable Document Format created by Wolfram Research.

Compound Document Format, or more formally Windows Compound Binary File Format is also an element of Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM) and Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) architectures, and was used in Microsoft Office files from Office 97 to prior to Office 2007 (where it was optional).
