Famous quotes containing the words general, machine and/or intelligence:

It has been the struggle between privileged men who have managed to get hold of the levers of power and the people in general with their vague and changing aspirations for equality, for justice, for some kind of gentler brotherhood and peace, which has kept that balance of forces we call our system of government in equilibrium.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)

Much that is natural, to the will must yield.
Men manufacture both machine and soul,
And use what they imperfectly control
To dare a future from the taken routes.
    Thom Gunn (b. 1929)

There are whole precincts of voters in this country whose united intelligence does not equal that of one representative American woman.
    Carrie Chapman Catt (1859–1947)
