The Community of Democracies (CD) is an intergovernmental organization of democracies and democratizing countries established in 2000 with a stated commitment to strengthening and deepening democratic norms and practices worldwide. The mission of the CD is to support civil society and emerging democracies worldwide. The CD is composed of both a governmental component made up of government representatives, and a non-governmental component comprising civil society organizations who meet as a group at biennial ministerial conferences. In 2004, CD governments also organized themselves into a Democracy Caucus in the United Nations (UN).
Current chairmanship of the Community of Democracies is Mongolia.

Famous quotes containing the words community and/or democracies:
“As blacks, we need not be afraid that encouraging moral development, a conscience and guilt will prevent social action. Black children without the ability to feel a normal amount of guilt will victimize their parents, relatives and community first. They are unlikely to be involved in social action to improve the black community. Their self-centered personalities will cause them to look out for themselves without concern for others, black or white.”
—James P. Comer (20th century)
“Democracies are notorious for a tendency to obey the feelings rather than the mind; thus the nature of democracies often makes it difficult to conclude a peace after a hard-won war. Generous victors are rare.”
—Amos Elon (b. 1926)
