The Commonwealth Building, originally known as the Commonwealth Trust Bank, is a 300 feet (91 m) tall skyscraper in Pittsburgh. It was completed in 1906 and has 21 floors. It is tied with The Carlyle and Washington Plaza for 26th tallest building in the city.
The building hosted the very first annual convention of the United Steel Workers labor union on June 17, 1936.
Famous quotes containing the words commonwealth and/or building:
“By this unprincipled facility of changing the state as often, and as much, and in as many ways as there are floating fancies or fashions, the whole chain and continuity of the commonwealth would be broken. No one generation could link with the other. Men would become little better than the flies of a summer.”
—Edmund Burke (17291797)
“History is a child building a sand-castle by the sea, and that child is the whole majesty of mans power in the world.”
—Heraclitus (c. 535475 B.C.)
