While it is possible to achieve some benefits of column-oriented layout even in a traditional row-oriented RDBMS system, specialisation of the storage layer and query execution engine provide further benefits. While nothing precludes providing both row-and-column optimized capabilities in a single DBMS, typically products are specialized in one of these directions.
